Sweet High School Crush Small Town Romance

Depending on the Cowboy (Wyoming Ranchers Book 4) by Jill Kemerer

Genre: Contemporary Romance, Inspirational Romance, Cowboy Romance, Small Town Romance

Location: Sunrise Bend, Wyoming

Romance: Very clean. Light kissing.

Faith: Lightly woven into the story. Both characters wrestle with past trauma and apply their faith as they grow.

Jill Kemerer instantly hooked me with the first few paragraphs in Blaine Mayer’s point of view. He’s excited and trepidatious over a former high school crush staying at the cabin on his ranch near his house. Only her situation is complicated. She’s recently divorced, seven months pregnant, and brought her teenage nephew and niece with her.

I loved reading Blaine’s internal musing about his feelings as he sorted through them. He weighed the risks and rewards. He learned to submit his desire for his future to God. His character felt very well developed and relatable.

Sienna’s life turned upside down, but she continued to have a positive attitude as she faced challenges head on. Her internal thoughts came across as very realistic and relevant to someone with her complicated life. It was a joy to watch her find her way as she learned more about herself and how to trust God.

The romance between the two characters developed sweetly. While they navigated some difficult circumstances in their lives, they learned to trust each other. The faith elements came across as biblical. I liked how they applied their faith to their lives.

The small-town setting warmed my heart. Blaine had a large group of friends and family that rallied around him and Sienna. I love reading about small towns. It takes me back to fond memories of my formative years.

I also enjoyed the details of ranch life that Kemerer included in the book, like the challenges of planting and harvesting hay. These details helped immerse the reader into the setting and helped me learn something new.

When I picked up this book, I didn’t realize it was the fourth book in the series. That didn’t matter. This book stands on its own. The author did a good job of filling in enough details about characters mentioned earlier in the series that I followed the story without feeling lost.

I strongly recommend this book to fans of inspirational romance or cowboy romances. It was an outstanding read.
