Today my friend, Naty Matos, joins us to talk about her book, Growth Lessons. Born in New York city, she spent most of her childhood in the beautiful Island of Puerto Rico and now lives in the city of Atlanta.
She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Clinical Psychology with a Minor in Mass Media Communications and a Master’s Degree in Mental Health Counseling.
1. Is there a message in your book that you want readers to grasp?
The general message of my book is that being a Christian is more than a title, it’s a lifestyle and that sometimes we get so caught up in the magnitude of the message that we forget how to stay ground ourselves in the details.
2. What was your favorite chapter (or part) to write and why?
I think my favorite Lesson is “The Spirit of Cinderella”. Many Christians, including myself for the longest time understand that they have a better life through salvation, but miss the fact that their worth and victory is within that same Savior.
3. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I’m quite a character, LOL! I like decorating but I have to be in the mood for it. Love to cook all kinds of dishes from scratch. I know a little bit of sewing and even embroidery. I’m a computer junkie who can easily get hooked on video games. I used to do wedding cakes and some photography in a former life…hahaha! Now I spend my days writing, serving at church and catching naps with my dog.
4. What do you do when you are not writing?
Sleep! I’m just kidding. I am very active at my local church. I’m a leader for Celebrate Recovery, which is a Christian Program beyond what it sounds (people usually associate recovery with substance abuse) that services all types of hurts, habits and hang ups. I also volunteer providing translation for Spanish speakers with another church ministry. I have a day job, and have fun with friends when there’s some time left.
5. Are experiences in the book based on someone you know, or events in your own life?
The lessons in this book are mainly mine, there are few that were born from discussions with friends and fellow believers, but for the most part were part of my own walk after taking the step to get serious about my journey.
6. When and why did you begin writing?
I started writing when I was fourteen years old. I just had the need to express myself. I liked to watch “novelas” (Spanish soaps) and I use to create my own stories in my head and put them down on paper.
7. Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?
That even in the darkest hour, there’s always hope.
8. Why is giving books to support our troops important to you?
Several of my family members have served in the armed forces. I do understand the value of the freedom we enjoy through their sacrifice and it’s important for them to know that we care.
