Meatballs and Blogging

As my husband would say, “Really?”  Yes, I’m going to talk about meatballs and blogging.  Why?  Why not?

Okay.  So, now that I’ve got your attention, let’s get down to business.  How do meatballs and blogging relate in my world?  Well, I like to prepare both ahead of time.  They can both be a lot of work and even time consuming.  But the rewards are worth it.

Meatballs:

My meatball recipe is top secret.  It’s one my husband loves.  In fact, I’ve spoiled him so much that he refuses to eat spaghetti without meatballs—and more specifically, without my meatballs.  But, this secret recipe involves a bit of work.  Not so much in the number of ingredients or even in how long it takes to cook.  No, it’s in the endless forming of meatballs.

When I make them, I tend to make enough for five or more meals worth.  That means a lot of rolling of meatballs.  Five minutes, ten minutes, twenty minutes later, standing in my kitchen, I’m wondering if I’ve made too much this time.  Half an hour later, I’ve finally got them all rolled out and on a baking sheet ready for the short cooking time in the oven.

Ah, but when they come out of the oven, I’m reminded again of why I do this over and over again.  They taste great.  And on Wednesday night, when I need an easy meal, I just pull the meatballs from the freezer and have spaghetti ready in no time.

Blogging:

Again, how do meatballs relate?  Well, I’ll get to that in a minute.

First, I have a confession.  I hate blogging.  I’ll admit it.  Not the writing part.  I like that.  It’s the trying to squeeze time in a packed schedule to reach out with something interesting to say to the vast blogosphere.  What should I talk about?  How does it relate to my writing?  How can I use it to drive traffic to my site and just maybe grab the attention of a new reader?

The list of questions goes on, much like the big batch of meatballs waiting to be formed.  It’s a lot of work to organize blogging, write something interesting, fresh, and meaningful.  But, the benefits are there.  If I can drive more traffic to my website, just maybe I can reach one new reader.  And, maybe that one new reader will even buy my book.  It is worth it.

So, my new approach to blogging:  write some blogs ahead of time, just like I do with my meatballs.  My blogging recipe?  Well, it’ll be a little history, a little about life as an indie author, a little about random thoughts (meatballs and blogging), and whatever else tickles my fancy.  Enjoy!

Discovering Up: How My Dog Taught Me A Lesson About God

hot air balloonA few weeks ago, my german shepherd chow mutt mix, Max, discovered up in a very traumatizing experience for him.  It was another lovely sunny cool (low 70’s) day in the Phoenix area.  Hot air balloonists were enjoying the perfect weather.

Late in the afternoon, we began to hear this rather loud sound, much like what I imaging a fire-breathing dragon might sound like, coming from what we thought was our neighbor’s yard.  Imagine our surprise when we ran out into our back yard and watched as a hot air balloon tried not to land in our tiny 20 ft. by 60 ft. backyard.

Max and Ginger (our pitbull boxer mix) began barking furiously at this strange and frightening thing in the sky.  While we were side tracked with taking pictures of the hot air balloon, Max, our scaredy-cat dog, jumped our 8 foot brick wall—yet again.

When we got him back two days later, he was much more mellow, but constantly looked up.  He would look at the ceiling fan, the ceiling, the dining room light, and the sky.  He discovered up as a result of his hot air balloon experience.

After a long week at work and dealing with my recurring back troubles, I have been rather discouraged.  I haven’t had the energy to work on book 3 of the Prescott Pioneers.  I’ve been in too much pain.  Then, as I was reading my morning Bible study, the aut

hor asked the question:  Can you think of a time in your life where you experienced a trial?  Was your faith proved true?

Immediately I remembered this time last year.  I was just beginning to heal from surgery on my right hand when my back gave out again—worst time to date.  I couldn’t stand up straight.  Over the course of several months, I went through chiropractic care, tried muscle relaxers and high doses of ibuprofen.  I finally discovered the source of my chronic back pain.  I had a ruptured disc.  The prognosis was less than encouraging.  It wasn’t bad enough for surgery, but there was no permanent solution either.

As I was going through this difficult time, I came across Isaiah 41:10, which has become my theme verse:

So do not fear, for I am with you;
do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you;
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand
.

I learned through those difficult times that God was my strength and that he would not leave me.  However, over the course of a year, the lesson faded.  Until this morning.

I rediscovered up when confronted with the question of whether my faith proved true.  My faith had been last year.  But what about now?  The past few days I’ve been discouraged and dismayed.  I’m tired of dealing with back pain and I was beginning to feel sorry for myself.  When I was reminded of a time my faith proved true, I was also reminded to look up, like Max does, and seek my source of strength again—God Almighty.

If you have a time where you learned a lesson about God because of your pet, I’d love to hear about.  You can email me at info@karenbaney.com, tweet me @karen_baney on twitter, post a comment on my Facebook page, or post a comment here.
