Character Interview: Mitzy Neuhaus, Portland’s Top Selling Realtor!

Spotlight on the Economy

In another hard-hitting interview, staff reporter Will Ruggard interviews Mitzy Neuhaus, Portland, Oregon’s “Sweetheart of Real Estate.”

WR: Mitzy, I’m glad you were willing to talk to us today. Many people in our city view the economic crash as being solely the responsibility of the real estate market. How do you respond to that?

MitzyMN: Not much for small talk, are you Will? Well, that’s okay. I thinkPortland knows how I feel about this. I talk about it once a week on the morning show. I think bad Realtors and bad mortgage brokers led gullible people into making bad decisions. And I know that good Realtors and good brokers are trying to clean up the mess.

WR: Are you willing to take your share of the responsibility?

MN: I’m a good Realtor, Will. I didn’t make this mess. But, you know what? God cleaned up my mess by his Grace, so I’ll do what I can to clean up this mess, even though I didn’t cause it.

WR: You like to resort to the God card. Some people have leveled criticism at you for only pulling out the God card when things get rough. How do you respond to that?

MN: God’s not a card, Will. He’s a friend, a father, a savior, and a guide. Do I turn to him when times get tough? I’d be crazy not to!

WR: Speaking of times getting tough, I have a note here that says I am supposed to ask you about your mafia connections. Does this have anything to do with Alonzo Miramontes?

MN: I thought I was here to talk about real estate and the economy, Will.

WR: No God card on this one, eh? And is that a “no comment” on the Mafia question?

MN: Let me ask you a question, Will. If you were about to be foreclosed, who would you turn to? A Realtor with over twelve years of experience who established a multi-million dollar business in less than five years, and who has a reputation for turning away buyers with no down payment, or a Realtor with an upside down mortgage, a fifty-thousand dollar car, a platinum card, and no cash? I don’t keep secrets from my clients, Will. They know who I am, where I come from, and what I can do for them.

WR: I agree Mitzy, you are in the 1% and regularly advertise the fact. How can you justify that with your Christian faith?

MN: Pulling the God-card there, are you Will? I can roll with that. I am a Christian and I am an honest business woman. Honest businesses succeed. Pretty simple.

WR: Alright Mitzy, I have one last question for you and I want an honest answer. No more dodging. What are you doing specifically, right now, to undo the damage that you Realtors have done to our economy?

MN: I am doing what I have always done, Will. Helping people plan carefully for their futures and make wise decisions regarding their resources. Thank you for your time.

WR: And one last time, is that a no-comment on your Mafia connections and your connection with Alonzo Miramontes?

MN: Thank you for your time, Will. Anytime you want to talk about what God has done for me or the economy, give me a call.

WR: Thank you for your time Mitzy. We will be watching for your name in the paper.

Character Interview from Karis by RM Strong

I hope you enjoy this fun character interview for this Young Adult superhero novel by R.M. Strong!

Trisha: Hi, everyone. It’s Trisha Terrance, with the Kingston Gazette. We’re sitting down with teen celebrity, Tamara Waterford. Ms. Waterford, thanks for meeting with me.

Tamara: You’re welcome. I just can’t believe Paul is making me do another one of these.

Trisha: Another?

Tamara: Interview. You guys know how much I hate these things.

Trisha: Yes, let’s explore that, first. Why do you seem to hate your celebrity?

Tamara: Oh, I don’t “seem to” hate it. I utterly despise it.

Trisha: Why?

Tamara: Because I’m only a celebrity because of things completely out of my control. My father was Paul Waterford’s friend long before I came around. They got back in touch because Waterford Industries was involved in yet another business takeover. Mom and Dad updated their will never believing in a million years it would ever be enforced. Then they were killed and I suddenly had to pick up the pieces of my shattered life in the spotlight; and the richest man in the world was suddenly something like a stepfather. What in that screams “celebrity”? I’m only famous because you people made me so.

But Paul keeps reminding me that God wants me to do something with the fame He’s given me—I still wonder whether it was God who “gave” me that fame or not—so I have to take time out away from my Algebra II homework to do another interview.

Trisha: You seem to have adjusted well, spotlight or no. What is your favorite part of being a Waterford?

Tamara: I am able to do things I would have thought possible. I am able to help people in ways I never would have dreamed.

Trisha: So all that money comes in handy, even if you didn’t want it?

Tamara: Oh, right, yeah, with all of Paul’s money. That too.

Trisha: So, what is your New Year’s Resolution this year?

Tamara: I haven’t thought about it. I would say the first one would be, oh, not dying. The guy who killed my parents…

Trisha: … Professor Damon Luescher, also known as Nothos?

Tamara: That’s a question? *sigh* Yes, him. He has a bad habit of breaking out of the asylum—I have no idea why they believed he was crazy when he ordered the massacre, I saw him, he was not crazy—and coming after me to try and kill me. So, staying out of his cross hairs will be important. I think, probably, keeping my grades up is also a big one—I don’t want to give Paul excuse to not let me go to West Kingston High for my junior year.

Trisha: I still can’t believe you want to go to public high school.

Tamara: Why? It’s what I would be doing if my parents were still alive and I was a normal teenager. Paul has always told me he doesn’t want me to do anything as aWaterfordI wouldn’t have been able to do as a Weatherby. I don’t think he originally meant schooling, but I grabbed that loophole and made him let me go to public school.

Trisha: What would you say to those who claim that you shouldn’t be all alone in a house full of men without any female influence during these formative years?

Tamara: A year and a half after coming here, we’re still getting used to each other, and it’s been kind of rough, but I’ve always been somewhat of a tomboy, so I don’t mind much. Besides, apparently, this is where God wants me to be, for now, so I can’t. I know a lot of girls who would love to be in my position. They don’t know what they’re asking for—I wouldn’t wish this life on anyone, not even Nothos.

Trisha: You wouldn’t?

Tamara: Would you want to give up everything you knew, watch your family murdered in front of you, have to go live with strangers, just so you could say you live under the same house as two of the World’s Sexiest Men?

Trisha: That’s a question?

Tamara: Look, are we about done here? I really have to get my homework done before I go to work tonight. You’re not asking any new questions, so just look up my interviews from six months ago, and copy and paste. I gotta go.

Character Interview from Vienta by Mary C. Findley

Vienta

Hamilton Jessup appears to live a quiet life as a government clerk. Recollections of his days as a soldier in Texas’ historic battles against Santa Ana only mar his peace a little. Celebrating a birthday with an old friend and resisting one more effort by Dan Costain to persuade him to read the Bible hardly disturb his ordinary life.

But an invitation to a dinner party at the palatial home of celebrity singer Maeve Collinswood changes everything. Ham enters into a sham marriage arrangement and Maeve pays his mysterious debts. In return she demands that he give her respectability and ignore her frequent disappearances and the inescapable conclusion that she is doing something dangerous and needs help.

But Ham has secrets of his own, including the loss of his best friend and the puzzle of Mexico’s “endgame scenario” that he must solve or risk the loss of everything he loves. Ham’s growing love for Maeve and his discovery that their secrets are connected in incredible ways plunges both of them into a race to outwit Mexican General Ampudio’s ruthless Lieutenant Chaco and stop the supply of arms to Mexico’s fight against the freedom of Texas.

Interview with Maeve Collinsworth Jessup from Vienta

Lavinia: I’m Lady Lavinia Lupine, Social Columnist for the Rio Grande Gazette. Today I’m privileged to interview the luminous Maeve Collinswood, singer and advocate for the cause of wounded soldiers. Maeve, darling, please put to rest all these rumors flying about that Rio Grand City’s most eligible socialite has gotten married.

Maeve: The truth is I am married, Lavinia, but I hope you’ll have a little respect and simply wish us joy. My husband-is a very private person and I don’t intend to drag him into the limelight with me.

Lavinia: Tut-tut, you know that won’t do, Maeve darling. We shall winkle it out of you or someone else, so spare your man some pain and let it come from you. We have heard that his name is Hamilton Jessup. But my dear, none of the bright and beautiful of the city have heard of him. You were seen on the arm of a devilishly handsome man at your Spring Ball. Is this he?

Maeve: Well, yes, Mr. Jessup was my escort at the ball. And he — well, yes, he is a — a very handsome man.

Lavinia: Tell us! Tell us! How did you meet? How is it that we know nothing about him? How did he catch the eye of Maeve Collinswood, and steal her heart?

Maeve: We were — I was — made aware of Mr. Jessup as a veteran and a respected Texas patriot.

Lavinia: A battle-scarred war hero?

Maeve: Yes, he was wounded at the Battle of San Jacinto.

Lavinia: Leading a charge, gloriously defending our freedom, no doubt, and shot down in the line of duty?

Maeve: Actually, he told me he was a supply clerk, injured by a stray bayonet.

Lavinia: A supply clerk! Surely you are joking! What does he do now?

Maeve: He — he is still a clerk, and he — well — he has told me that he solves puzzles.

Lavinia: Now, I warned you, Maeve, it’s no use to put me off. I have my sources and will find out!

Maeve: This is a — a marriage of convenience. He has graciously consented to assist me in my fundraising efforts, but he doesn’t cart me to his workplace and show me all he does. I’m sure the work he does is very important.

Lavinia: It appears you have no idea what he does, dearest Maeve. I’ve heard a rumor that he drinks.

Maeve: Suppose you were called a cripple and laughed at when you stumbled or fell! Perhaps you would drink as well! I know he is very earnest, intelligent and fine when he scatters his papers about the den and tries to solve his puzzles, whatever they are.

Lavinia: We know you fainted at your last concert, dear. We also hear he popped you in your carriage to go home alone and returned to the house late that night roaring drunk. He even made a scene at your brunch gathering the next day. Do tell us about that.

Maeve: Very well, Lavinia, since you have been so kind as to ask about my husband, I will tell you this: While in pain and barely able to walk, Hamilton Jessup interrupted a shallow and silly bunch of women fretting over trifles and told us a story of courage and sacrifice and tragedy that brought in more donations than I have ever received with my own appeals. He was foolish enough to think he needed to apologize for his speech but I have never been so moved by an expression of pain and nobility as I was by his. Print that in your paper, and good day to you.

Niki Turner – On A Blind Date

In Nickels, the book starts with a phone conversation between Niki Turner and her roommate, Marcy, about a blind date.  For fun, here’s how I imagine Niki would answer some of those get-to-know you questions a potential date might ask.

Niki Turner

Niki Turner

1.  How much coffee do you drink in a day?

Let’s just say, I drink just shy of the amount that an I.V. would pump into my veins.  I love coffee.  But never without at least half a dozen creamers.  My favorite is an iced mocha from Starbucks.  The bigger the better.

2.  What do you do for a living?

I’m a software engineer.  [At date’s confused look she adds:]  Computer programmer.  Coder.  Developer.  Whatever you want to call me.  I write software.

3.  Describe your ideal weekend.

[Smirks].  Either baking in the sun while floating in my pool or crashed out on my couch watching Office Space or Princess Bride.

4.  If you weren’t a software engineer, what would you be?

A software engineer.  [Date sighs.]  Really, it’s the only thing I’ve ever wanted to do.  Besides, I’ve only been doing it for four years.  I’ve got a long career ahead of me.  I’m just getting started.

5.  Describe your ideal man.

None.  [Date frowns.]  You know Marcy set me up with you.  What kind of question is that for a first date anyway?  How would you answer that question?

[Date sighs and answers:]  None.  I’m looking for a woman.

[Niki sighs.]  Might want to keep looking.

6.  If you could visit any country in the world, where would you go?

Nowhere.  I don’t really like to travel.  [Date drums fingers on table.]  Okay.  Maybe back to Germany.  I didn’t get to see much of it while I live there with my brother.  He was stationed there.

[Date asks:] Why were you living with your brother?

[Niki cringes.]  It’s a long story.  Forget I said anything.

7.  Do you believe in love at first sight?

I suppose not, since I’m not even sure how I feel about the idea of love.

8.  Then you aren’t looking to get married?

We just met.  But no.  Probably not ever.  I mean, that’s a pretty serious commitment.  See, this is why I hate blind dates.  The guys Marcy picks are always looking for something long-term.  I can see it written all over your face.  [Rolls her eyes.]  This is why I don’t date.  I’m not thinking about marriage.  My career is going good.  I just don’t have time for something serious…

9.  Okay.  Um…  If your friends were coming over, what would you cook?

We’d probably grill out chicken or steak if it’s not too hot or cold outside.  I’d make some side dish, like pasta salad, to go with it.  None of that store bought stuff.  Or, if I felt energetic, I might make my mom’s homemade lasagna.  It’s a favorite.

10.  Where do you see yourself in five years?

[Swallows hard.  Picks up her phone to see if she has any messages.]  I haven’t thought about it.  [Nervously flicks her hair over her shoulder then asks server for the check.]

Kyle Jacobs

I thought you might enjoy getting to know Kyle Jacobs, the starring male role in Nickels.  Matt Dixon is the leader for Kyle’s sister’s small group.  Although this scene does not appear in the book, it’s how I imagine Kyle and Matt’s friendship started.

Kyle Jacobs

Kyle Jacobs

“Hey, Matt.”

“Hi, Kyle.  Nice to meet you.”

“You too.”  Kyle sat down at the small table at Starbucks with his grande black coffee.  “I hope you don’t think it’s weird that my sister suggested we meet.”

“Marcy?  Naw.  It’s sweet that she wants you to make friends.”

Kyle smiled.  “I think it’s more that she likes to meddle in everyone else’s lives.”

Matt laughed.  “So…  Marcy tells me you recently left the Air Force.  What did you do while you were in?”

Kyle shifted in his chair, the smile fading from his lips.  Looking off towards the entrance of the coffee shop, he said, “I was a helicopter pilot.  Part of a Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR) unit.  Spent a lot of time the last few years flying into dangerous situations in Iraq, mostly.  Rescuing downed pilots.  Emergency extractions of officials when things got bad.  That sort of thing.”

“Do you miss it?”

Kyle hesitated.  “Yes and no.  It’s not nearly as glamorous as it sounds.  But, I do miss flying.”

“Yeah.  Marcy said you might not be able to fly again.”

“There’s not a chance of that happening.  Not with a medical discharge.”

Matt nodded.  “Found a job yet?”

“Yeah.  My dad put in a good word for me with a DOD contractor.  They make aviation controls for helicopters.  I’m not exactly sure if they had an opening or if Dad convinced them they should hire me anyway.  Either way, my military experience seemed pretty important to them.  I start on Monday.”

“Cool.  Do you think it’s going to be tough switching from a military career to a civilian one?”

Kyle rubbed his chin with one hand.  “Maybe.  I’m just glad to be going back to work.  It’s been months since the accident.  Haven’t contributed much to society for awhile.”

Matt nodded and took a sip of his iced mocha.  “So, why Arizona?  Ever lived here before?”

“Marcy’s here.  Mom and Dad live out near Luke Air Force Base.  Dad’s a flight instructor there.  Probably won’t see too much of them, though, since it’s all the way across town.”

“You and Marcy pretty close?”

Kyle laughed.  “We were quite a team growing up.  Caused all sorts of trouble for Mom when we put our minds together.  I kinda lost touch with her for a few years while I was in the Air Force, but I’m glad that I live right up the street now.  Besides, she’s rooming with Niki Turner.”

Matt quirked an eyebrow.  “Oh?”

Heat rushed to Kyle’s cheeks.  He hadn’t meant to mention Niki, though he thought of her constantly since moving to town.  “No reason.”
